A letter from Doris McCarthy's maternal grandfather, Archie Moffatt, sent to her father George A. McCarthy regarding his second proposal to Doris' mother and his consent, sent from Montreal, June 18, 1900. Letter reads: "Montreal My dear Mr. McCarthy I have to apologize for my apparent neglect in not replying to your letter of the 10th more promptly but the question put is so serious that it must be my excuse for taking time to deliberate and consult In my mind an engagement is as serious and binding as marriage and the interest of my daughter, for whom my love cannot be expressed in words, demands that it should not be lightly entered upon or without serious reflection. While I really appreciate the honor. you for a second time confer on me I regret you have not taken me more into your confidence respecting your worldly prospects for as I told you six months ago that was the only reason I had in hesitating to give my consent; for while I have the fullest confidence in your honor and good intentions. I know that young people are over sanguine and hopeful and consider the sentimental side of such a question rather than the material which I am sorry to say after all is the most enduring. However to relieve you from suspense, I give my consent, but I hope you will not misunderstand me. If I ask you to write me more fully on the above subject and to regard me always as your friend and wellwisher. AW Moffatt."
